Trauma Awareness and Boundary Cover of Webtoons Focusing on Secondary Narratives and Risk Communication

Abstract

The function of language and images as distinct representational tools shapes the reception of stimuli. As textual descriptions are wont to condense shocking events into refined contextual descriptions, images and videos are able to vividly recreate them, thereby facilitating indirect experiences that closely mirror reality. In the context of platform-driven industries, webtoons employ fantasy as a means of transcending real-world constraints and fostering deep immersion. Readers utilise the "unreality" of fantasy to maintain psychological distance from morally troubling events. Given that the purpose of fantasy narratives is to remain distinct from empirical reality, it is unsurprising that they often adopt unconventional forms and pursue heightened stimuli in response to market dynamics. As active consumers in digital media environments, readers engage with these works; however, their immersion does not stem from a vicarious fulfilment of immoral desires. Instead, they are regarded as discrete cultural phenomena. Notwithstanding, provocative content has the capacity to elicit stress responses that are analogous to trauma, irrespective of the reader’s developmental stage. This necessitates a shift in social judgment towards the audience? the active agents of consumption ? rather than focusing exclusively on creators or platforms. Consequently, it is incumbent upon authors to undertake essential risk communication to enhance media literacy. In light of the varied social backgrounds and uncertain nature of audiences, such practices can be regarded as a form of media assistance, thereby empowering readers to make autonomous decisions regarding their engagement with a given work.
