Abstract

In this paper, I comprehensively examined the process by which the Wang Zhaojun narrative became established and circulated as a Korean old novel. Originating from a brief historical record, the Wang Zhaojun narrative developed into a full-length novel called . The basic setting of the work consists of three axes: loyalty and filial piety, betrayal and conspiracy, and tragedy and reconciliation. And it was published during the Japanese colonial period under the title . The translation of the original work was mainly done by abbreviating the poems and scene descriptions while keeping the overall narrative almost intact. However, some parts reveal traces of deliberate reworking. was once considered a variant of , but while sharing the same subject matter, they are entirely different works. We can glimpse the process by which a universal narrative transcending time and borders became established as an old novel familiar to our readers.
