A Review on Social Foundations to Promote AIP (Aging in Place) for the Elderly

Lee Hwa-seon
Professor, Div. of Welfare, Seoul Digital University, South Korea

Abstract

AIP (Aging in Place) is gaining traction and being discussed as a new paradigm for dealing with an aging population, as the desire of older adults to live autonomously and independently in their later years meets the need of governments to reduce the cost burden of operating senior facilities. Various domestic and international studies on AIP claim that AIP has a positive impact on the quality of life in old age, which is possible when a social environment is provided for the elderly to live independently. This study examines the actual situation of essential medical care, palliative care and care at the end of life, and the current laws and systems of AIP-related policies, and makes recommendations on the responsibilities of national and local governments and effective measures to fulfill those responsibilities in the future.
