Abstract

Phenomenological research, among qualitative research methods, is a methodology that unveils what lies beneath a phenomenon and derives its essence from it. In order to reveal the essence of a phenomenon according to the nature of certain research, it is necessary to apply a variety of phenomenological methodologies, taking advantage of the original purpose of phenomenological research. In reality, however, phenomenological methodology heavily depends on the methodology of Giorgi and Van Manen. Based on the awareness of this problem, this study examined the analysis method of the phenomenological self-evaluation method applied to adolescents’ experience of school violence. It is thought that this methodology is suitable for reaching the essence, the original purpose of phenomenology, because the reduction process is detailed; it is comprised of four steps. Specifically, this study demonstrated the reduction process of the phenomenological self-evaluation method using in-depth interviews with school violence victims. It can be said that this phenomenological can be an appropriate research method in terms of understanding the essence of phenomena that social welfare or sociology deals with.
